A fisherman was bitten by a 2m shark in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape yesterday while trying to drag it to the beach.

Lionel McDougall, 42, from Port Elizabeth, had to have a shark tooth removed from his left knee after the shark turned on him in shallow water.

Juan Pretorius, station commander of the Port Alfred National Sea Rescue Institute, said McDougall had grabbed the ragged tooth shark by the tail after hooking it on his line.

It turned and bit his leg, and he hurt his hand while prying the shark's jaws open.

The shark was released back into the sea.
