With New York set to accommodate the bold new designs of the Spring 2015 season from September 4-10, we take a look at some of the brightest and most arresting art exhibitions on show.

At the Whitney Museum of American Art

Jeff Koons: A Retrospective - until Oct 19
Edward Hopper and Photography - until Oct 19
Collecting Calder - until Oct 19
Five Decades of Gifts - until Oct 19

The Whitney's current crop is headlined by a Jeff Koons retrospective that collects over 150 objects from the highly praised multidisciplinary artist, an ideal introduction for newcomers and a comprehensive retrospective for the familiar.

Also on view is "Five Decades of Gifts," examining 50 years' worth of donations to the art institution with one eye on the 2015 opening of a new buldings, while the fifth-floor mezzanine hosts a comparison of Edward Hopper's paintings and the output of six thematically linked contemporary photographers, as well as a selection of Alexander Calder sculptures and drawings.

A total of twelve MoMA exhibitions run during 2014's New York Fashion Week, with one -- Trajal Harrell's dance work -- coinciding with opening night.

Of particular interest are the Christopher Williams and Robert Heinecken photographic retrospectives; the "Designing Modern Women" exhibit, which examines the impact of women on design practice; the eclectic, genre-crossing "Collection of Ideas"; and the Patty Chang and David Kelley collaborative focus on the surrounds of China's Three Gorges Dam.

Combine a viewing of Garry Winogrand's exhaustive gallery of work with a perspective onto New York from the Met's verdant rooftop, take the selection of Fabergé creations and feel the effects of Amie Siegel's film "Provenance" as it follows the journey of a high luxury work from Swiss architect and furniture designer Pierre Jeanneret.

Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe - Sept 10 to Feb 15

Opening just as NY Fashion Week draws to a close, but perfect for the follower of clothing trends, "Killer Heels" will feature 160 pieces of arch footwear that stretch from outrageous modern day examples back to the piece's 16-century origins. With contributions from the MoMA and Bata Shoe Museum and designs from Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Christian Louboutin and more.

Contemporary art from the Arab world, gathered under a title borrowed from the 1976 film by Godard, Gorin and Miéville, with a display of film, photography, concept art and visual essays in addition to more traditional mediums.
