Bollywood playback singer Sukhwinder Singh put on an exceptional performance at his concert last Saturday night at the Walter Sisulu Hall in Randburg, Johannesburg.

He performed to a crowd of 1300 adoring fans.

Singh, 43, started the show with his hit song, Jai Ho, from the film Slumdog Millionaire. It was composed by AR Rahman, who won an Oscar for it.

In the audience, little girls dressed in cute salwar kameez and chaniya cholis (Indian traditional dress) choreographed their Bollywood dance moves in the aisles - instructed by their mothers. Singh continued to keep his audience going with other hits such as Chaiyya Chaiyya and Dil Se.

Although his music was no doubt excellent, his dress sense failed to impress. He wore black and white decorated cargo pants with a white short-sleeve shirt paired with what looked like a school tie. But I doubt his audience noticed what he wore - the award-winning singer had them eating out of the palm of his hands.

During the interval, the men topped up their beer glasses while the women enjoyed their samoosas and tea. The children kept themselves entertained with their rendition of Singh's performance.

Seven-year-old Tiara Nana from Robertsham, southern Johannesburg, was there with her mother, Kashmira. She said she was a "huge fan" of Singh and loved his version of Jai Ho.

Manjit Rawat from Lonehill joked that he was there to "find a potential wife".

Singh maintained his level of performance throughout the show. The audience was lively and in the mood for good music and dancing.

His performance deserved a bigger venue, though. His powerful voice was stifled in the small hall - but he still managed to keep the crowd ecstatic.
