When music stars get bored, they tend to go out and buy a ridiculous car or, as is the case with these celebrities, a garage full of them

1) Nick Mason: Pink Floyd

The Dark Side of The Moon literally sent the members of British progressive-rock outfit Pink Floyd into financial orbit. While guitarist David Gilmour splurged on aircraft, drummer Nick Mason spent his hard-earned royalties on sports cars and motor racing. If you comb through the man's history, you'll see that he competed in the Le Mans 24-Hour no less than five times between 1979 and 1984 - his final appearance behind the wheel of the famed Porsche 956. These days he spends more time seeing to his vast collection of wheeled exotica.

Packing the floors of two aircraft hangars, the inventory includes unicorns such as a Maserati T61 Birdcage, McLaren F1 GTR, Ford Model T, Alfa 8C and Jaguar D-Type. But perhaps most impressive is his 1962 Ferrari GTO (above) - a coveted classic of which only 39 were built. Despite being worth almost 50 million US dollars, Mason, 71, isn't shy of racing it at Le Mans Classic or the Goodwood Festival of Speed. He's also used it once or twice for a nocturnal jaunt into London, parking it on the street for all to enjoy. Brave man.

2) Billy F Gibbons: ZZ Top

BFG (below) is one interesting cat. When not grinding axe for blues-rock outfit ZZ Top, he can be found acting or celebrity cheffing. He's big on Mexican chow and the 65-year-old has his own line of tongue-scorching sauces. In between all this he dabbles in the dark art of car customisation. In fact he owns some of the most iconic American hot rods to ever roll through the Texas desert. Immortalised on MTV during the 1980s, his crimson Eliminator Coupé (below) starred in many of the band's music videos, including that dirty boot-scootin' banger Sharp Dressed Man.

Another jewel in the frontman's collection is CadZZilla: a slammed 1948 Cadillac Series 62 Sedanette built by Boyd Coddington of American Hot Rod fame. Then there's the Leapin' Limo, Mambo Coupé and imaginatively named Slampala - a salute to the low-rider culture. All are driven regularly, usually along the back roads around Palm Springs and Tucson.

3) Jay Kay: Jamiroquai

When mixing motors and musicians it's hard not to mention British funk-jazz stalwart Jay Kay (below). This is because the 45-year-old Jamiroquai frontman lays claim to one of the finest and most varied car collections on the planet. If you were to sneak inside his garage, you'd see everything from a Fiat Abarth 1000 right through to the mighty Lamborghini Miura - the machine that single-handedly created the supercar moniker when it was launched in 1963.

While the self-proclaimed Space Cowboy may treasure his 1967 Ferrari 275 GBT/4 (worth around R31-million - gulp) the most, we prefer some of his cheaper and more eclectic pieces: cars like the Audi Quattro Sport (below), Ferrari Vignale 330GT and BMW 2002 Bauer Cabriolet.

4) Pharrell Williams: Singer and producer

Alongside Dave Grohl, Williams is one of those annoyingly talented musical all-rounders. Whether working his production magic in The Neptunes, drumming for alt-rock band N.E.R.D. or churning out infectious soul-infused pop hits like Happy , this 41-year-old Virginian does it all with ease.

Although not quite as car mad as Jay Kay and BFG, Williams still lays claim to an enviable automotive harem. Peek through his garage door and you'll spot a rare Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (below), plus a pair of Rolls-Royce Phantoms - one a saloon, the other a drophead (that's posh-speak for cabriolet, in case you're wondering). He also holds a key to the much sought-after Ferrari Enzo: a 485kW V12 monster of which only 400 were made.

5) 'Lil Wayne: Rapper

The dreadlocked, tattooed rapper from New Orleans is definitely one of hip-hop's most colourful and outspoken personalities. He's been something of a game-changer too, with a distinctive musical style that continues to influence. A massive Nirvana fan (the group's magnum opus, Nevermind, inspired his rock-tinged 2010 release Rebirth), Wayne is also an avid collector of all things automotive.

Unlike many of his peers who prefer pimped-up pieces of American iron, this 32-year-old artist has a penchant for European speedsters. Acquisitions include an Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, a Bentley Mulsanne and a 16-cylinder, 408km/h Bugatti Veyron (according to Wayne, he was officially the first African-American to own one). He can also be seen zipping around in a Canadian-built Campagna T-Rex (below) - a quirky three-wheeled cycle-car given to him by protégé Nicki Minaj. High on horsepower and low on kerb weight, it will sprint to 100km/h in under four seconds.
