We asked South African gamer, blogger and popular cosplayer Genevieve 'KomboKitten' Lesch to tell us which cosplay themes are currently big on the local scene

Cosplay, or costume play, is a popular modern performance art where cosplayers dress up as fictional characters and are judged on the accuracy of their costumes, as well as their ability to mimic their chosen character. Themes are generally taken from games, comic books, sci-fi movies or anime.

So what cosplay themes should we look out for in 2015?

Pokemon

Still a favourite among many, and with the countless numbers of characters to choose from, cosplayers will never run out of inspiration with Pokemon as their muse.

Mario Brothers

Sentimental value accounts largely for this one; the Italian brothers from the decades-old video game still feature largely on the SA cosplay scene.

Dota

Dota 2 is a first person shooter multi-player, battle arena video game with a massive following in SA. Its online player numbers continue to grow and its array of characters make it popular among cosplayers.

League of Legends

Leading the trend in cosplay themes this year is definitely League of Legends. Full of characters boasting impressive weapons it's not hard to see why.

Final Fantasy

The Final Fantasy media franchise takes the final spot on the list. Cosplayers who prefer this theme can select from a range of characters from the franchise's video games, motion pictures or anime.
