Fermenting happiness

This celebration of sobriety leaves you satisfied and sexy, writes Sam ChambersAs waistlines widen, people are waking up to the ways in which their lifestyles boost the bulge and the accompanying list of health concerns. In response to this growing demand for "super foods" and cleaner lives, a host of new vegan restaurants and consciously sober events have been popping up around Cape Town, encouraging those of us stuck in a cycle of hangovers to abandon our brandy for bran and our Coke for cacao, all while having a fabulously fun time. The probiotics, living enzymes and nutrients wake up your digestive systemLeading the pack as one of the most health-conscious and eclectic eateries is Sexy Food on Bree Street, where sprouts and fermentations contribute to a buffet-style menu that consists of more than 80% living ingredients. The concoction of probiotics, living enzymes and nutrients wakes up your digestive system and leaves you feeling satisfied - and even sexy. Among the many offerings are Happy Miso Broth, sprouted humus, wild rice, kraut-chi, kombucha chilli and tangy kefir and seaweed salt to kick it all off.The owner of the wood-clad café is James Kuiper, whose intimate relationship with food began after he had cancer at the age of 17. Chemotherapy left his body ravaged and he recovered by treating food as medicine, a process friends describe as miraculous. Almost a decade later, and using the knowledge gained, Sexy Food offers a healing package of fermented bliss.Kuiper is ready to spread the gospel in intensive eight-week fermentation and sprouting workshops and recently launched regular Cosmic Garden events, which are celebrations of sobriety.Taking place in the Treehouse room next to the restaurant, the Cosmic Garden holds about 50 people and runs for six hours as resident DJ Sadhu Sensi takes the crowd on a sound journey ranging from classics to techno, accompanied at times by tribal drums that resonate throughout the space. The revellers stay powered on kombucha and buchu water, ages range from teens to 60s and the environment invites dancers to be free and feel unjudged in their bodies. The methods of fermentation Kuiper uses have been popular in Asia for centuries and are part of the reason our eastern counterparts tend to live longer and healthier than people do in the West.Kuiper reckons that Sexy Food could be the restaurant with the widest variety of fermented offerings in the world - a celebration of the body, inside and out, and a worthwhile stop-off for anyone interested in healthy living.190 Bree Street, 021-422-5445, Monday to Friday 8am-5pm, Saturday 9am-2pm..
