With some of the Cape's top restaurants offering tantalising winter specials, you have the chance to sample legendary cuisine at rather more affordable prices than usual. So brave the chill and head out to one of these renowned eateries for some winter indulgence

AUBERGINE

Offering elegant fine dining in Gardens, Aubergine has been on the gourmet’s map of Cape Town for years. Its winter bistro menu features seasonal gems such as lemon and sage risotto with calamari and chorizo, slow-braised lamb shoulder and masala-fried ostrich fillet. Two courses for R250; three courses for R340. Evenings from 6pm.

LA COLOMBE

A regular on the San Pellegrino list of the top 50 restaurants in the world, La Colombe, now relocated to Silvermist Wine Estate at the top of Constantia Nek, is a gourmet experience not to be missed. Take advantage of the irresistible winter lunch special to indulge in Scot Kirton’s imaginative cuisine. R285/person for a three-course set menu, Monday to Thursday, lunch only.

FYNDRAAI

Known for its uniquely South African cuisine with a modern twist, a visit to Fyndraai at the beautiful Solms-Delta Wine Estate near Franschhoek is as delightful for a winter day out as it is in summer. Waterblommetjie, pickled spekboom and lemon pelargonium are some the intriguing local flavours in the winter set menu. Three course set menu R160/person, Monday to Sunday, noon till 5pm.

PIGALLE

Steaks, seafood and razzmatazz: for a lively evening out on the town, Pigalle comes up trumps with live music, dancing and a glitzy vibe. Ask for the winter special menu to get great value with plenty of tasty choices, including a huge seafood platter for two. Two courses R210; three courses R240; winter seafood platter for two R495. Monday–Thursday dinner; Tuesday–Friday lunch.

The hip bistro and tapas venue on Steenberg wine estate in Tokai has some winter tapas temptation in store. Executive chef Kerry Kilpin selects five tapas dishes each day to make up the early-evening special with a glass each of one of the estate wines, making it the perfect time to seek out this hidden gem. Five tapas of the day and two glasses of wine R300 for two people sharing. 4.30pm–7.30pm daily until end July.
