Don’t feel limited by a small kitchen. By using every available space and clever design, there’s potential to create a functional and elegant kitchen, even in a tight space. Here are some ideas to get you started

1) Clear out the clutter

It pays to be organised in a small kitchen. Getting rid of unnecessary clutter, especially on countertops, and having a place for everything will help you to see how much space you really have, and how you can maximise it.

2) Designate zones for different activities

One of the advantages to a compact kitchen is that everything is close at hand, so designate zones and keep items for each activity together.

3) Squeeze in as much storage as you can

When it comes to storage, there is a range of products to suit a small kitchen, from pullout pantries to revolving corner units.

Deep drawers can provide extra levels of storage, which make items more accessible than hunting for things at the back of cupboards. Raised cabinetry has a “free-standing” effect, and recessed handles or touch-open systems provide a sleek appearance.

4) Let the light in

Additional lighting, whether natural from a door or window, or functional, such as undercounter LED strips or pendants over the dining area, will help to brighten the kitchen, so it won’t feel cramped.

5) Make your sink do double duty

Placing a chopping board over the sink, when it’s not in use, creates an additional work surface.

6) Multi-functional furniture is a must

An island can be a preparation surface, dining space or even storage if there are shelves underneath. Having it on castors means you can reconfigure the space to suit you.

7) Pay attention to finishes

In an open-plan kitchen-living area, use the same materials and finishes throughout, to create a streamlined look and the illusion of more space.

Consider reflective surfaces, such as stainless steel appliances, a mirror splashback and high-gloss finishes, to amplify light and make the room feel bigger.

When it comes to colour, a palette of white and neutral hues can also assist with opening up the space.

8) Don't waste wall space

Pots, pans, knives, utensils, tea towels and even spices can be hung on the wall to save space in drawers. Wall-mounted shelves will keep countertops free.

9) Opt for stow-away seating

Choose seating that can easily fit under the counter, so it’s out of the way when not in use. Stools or a bench are ideal.

10) Pick your appliances wisely

When selecting appliances, integrated products can easily be concealed for a clutter-free look. Give thought to how you use appliances. For example, do you need a large dishwasher if you regularly eat out?
