Where did you spend your last holiday?

A houseboat on the Vaal River, getting drunk, eating too much and wallowing in the jacuzzi.

What was the best thing you did while there?

Swim in the river.

Your favourite city abroad and why?

Paris. I love the food, the language and especially the people. I find their arrogance endearing. They walk around in fur coats in summer.

What must a first-time visitor see there?

The extraordinary view of Paris from the Sacré Coeur, having arrived via cable car.

What should they not bother with?

The Moulin Rouge. The girls aren't hot enough for the money you'll pay.

What was your best holiday, ever?

My honeymoon at Singita Lebombo. Complete luxury in the bush.

What was your worst holiday ever? What happened?

A family holiday to the Cango Caves. We were halfway in and I was dying to pee. I knew we couldn't turn back so I tried to knyp but in vain. I peed in my pants. I was six years old and emotionally scarred for life.

Which is the worst hotel you have stayed in?

On a six-week road trip across the States I found a cheap motel in Memphis. It looked like the Bates Motel. We had to drink ourselves silly so we could bring ourselves to sleep there.

What is the best thing you have been given on holiday ... or pinched from a hotel?

Lions Valley Lodge at Nambiti has pens recycled from paper. I love pens. I steal at least three every time I go there.

Who would be your fantasy holiday companion and why?

For a beach holiday, Zak Efron so I could look at him. He mustn't talk though. Anywhere else, Richard Branson, who is up for anything and is sure to pick up the tab.

What's your best piece of travel advice?

To travel. Don't spend money on cars and properties, spend it on travelling. You learn so much about yourself.

One place you'd call "never again"?

Mozambique. Beach, beach, mosquitoes.
