I am planning to extend a business trip in Singapore by three nights and I am looking for an affordable but good hotel. It should cost less than 200 Singapore dollars per room per night inclusive of taxes and preferably include breakfast. Anything reasonably central or next to a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station would be great. — Thabani Myeza

Although the rates at Singapore hotels have soared in recent years, you can still find a good hotel in a central location for less than S$200 (around R1 340). I checked the discount website www.booking.com and selected some hotels that meet your criteria. Please note that you need to add a total of 17.70% to the rates, which comprises taxes of 7% and a 10.70% service charge. A great choice would be the four-star Riverview Hotel, which is only a five-minute stroll from the nightlife at Robertson Quay. There is a free shuttle service to Orchard Road. Rooms are available from S$179 excluding breakfast. Another stylish four-star hotel is the Moon Hotel in Little India. It is a 10-minute walk from both Bugis and Little India MRT stations and a 10-minute stroll from the 24-hour Mustafa Shopping Centre. Rooms with breakfast start at S$146.

One of the cheaper hotels is the three-star Fragrance Hotel Riverside, which has a special rate of only S$91.75. The regular rates start at S$120.81. The hotel is a five-minute walk from the Clarke Quay MRT station and the Boat Quay entertainment venues. Another budget hotel is the three-star Fort Canning Lodge, located next to Fort Canning Park and a short walk from the Plaza Singapore. Rooms are available from S$118. You could also try the Marrison Hotel, which is 10 minutes’ walk from the Bugis MRT Station and Raffles City Shopping Centre. You can get a standard room from S$105.36. The three-star Porcelain Hotel, which offers a spa and free Wi-Fi, is located five minutes’ walk from Chinatown MRT station. Room rates start at S$130. The same rate is applicable at the Robertson Quay Hotel, which is a 10-minute walk from Clarke Quay MRT station. A good offer on www.asiatravel.com is the four-star V Hotel Lavender, which is offering rooms from only S$139. Conveniently located above Lavender MRT Station, the hotel is close to the Golden Mile complex.
