Springboks thrash the World

12 July 2015 - 02:03 By CRAIG RAY

Fullback Willie le Roux scored a hat-trick of tries and centre Damian de Allende a brace as the Boks cruised to a comfortable win over a willing but outgunned World XV in cold, wet conditions in Cape Town yesterday. The Springboks came into the match looking to answer some questions rather than play dazzling exhibition rugby and their performance indicated it was a job well done. The lineout purred along beautifully while their counter-attacking was electric at times. De Allende was superb in sparking several counters with his ability to ease past defenders.story_article_left1His second try, scored in the final minute, was a gem from turnover inside the Boks' 22.The ball went wide where De Allende chipped, chased, toed ahead and scored to seal a fine personal performance. The Boks scored seven tries.De Allende's display was another reminder to returning captain Jean de Villiers, who came on to rousing applause in the 60th minute after nine months out injured, that possession of the No 12 jersey will be a fight. The breakdown also looked better with Francois Louw back in the frame. He made his first steal in the second minute and continuously harassed World XV ball carriers when they went to deck in his vicinity.Hooker Bismarck du Plessis was also effective at the breakdown but coach Heyneke Meyer won't want to see him attempting more grubbers this season. Du Plessis' attempted kick late in the first half was one of the few times the Boks slipped into festival mode. The only real area of concern for the Boks was in the scrums. Carl Hayman gave Tendai Mtawarira a tough time, but he has done that to opponents for years. The Beast won't face any better this season.full_story_image_hright1The scrum improved in the second half with Trevor Nyakane and debutant Vincent Koch putting the reshuffled World XV pack under pressure.Discipline was also an issue with two yellow cards - one for Louw and the other for Le Roux - both for marginal foul play calls. Flyhalf Handre Pollard also struggled off the tee, landing only three from seven. The conditions were tough for expansive rugby, with light rain before the game having made the playing surface slippery. Even so, the centre pairing of De Allende and Jesse Kriel looked promising.Kriel possesses real pace and occasionally popped up wide to free Bryan Habana, but will need sterner examinations to secure a World Cup berth.SCORERSSouth Africa 46 - Tries: Damian de Allende (2), Eben Etzebeth, Willie le Roux (3), Cobus Reinach Conversions: Handre Pollard (2), Pat Lambie (2).
