SuperDan and rugby's Supermen soar

The best team in the world - in the words of Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer - last night delivered a performance worthy of that description to win one of the best Rugby World Cup finals. Spearheaded by the best flyhalf in the world game Dan Carter, who has been nicknamed SuperDan in the English press, the All Blacks defeated Australia 34-17 at Twickenham in London.The All Blacks were dominant and led 16-3 at halftime, extending it to 21-3 early in the second half before a brief fightback brought the Wallabies to within four points of the Kiwis before the champions again surged ahead and clinched the game.story_article_left1It was the first time in eight Rugby World Cup finals that the defending champions have won the trophy and the first time that the All Blacks have won it away from New Zealand. Previously they had won the inaugural World Cup of 1987 and again in 2011, when both tournaments were hosted by New Zealand.At the end, the Wallabies were left to lick their wounds along with the Springboks, who were eliminated a week ago in the semifinal against the All Blacks, but only by two points.On Friday night the Boks beat Argentina 24-13 in the bronze medal match, and Meyer said he would like to continue as coach. He was backed in his ambition by the president of the SA Rugby Union, Oregan Hoskins. The union is expected to confirm an extension of Meyer's contract next month...
