Telkom CEO Maseko in court over 'false number plate' fraud

05 July 2015 - 02:02 By Asha Speckman

Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Friday over charges relating to traffic regulation fraud. Maseko confirmed his court appearance, but denied allegations that he had been arrested and was out on bail. The matter will be heard in court on September 4.Maseko faces one charge of fraud and two others related to the contravention of the National Road Traffic Act of 1996.Police launched an investigation into Maseko in July last year after Mabena Motshoane accused Maseko of cloning his car number plates to avoid traffic fines.Motshoane had bought Maseko's older model Range Rover from a car dealership. But when he tried to renew his licence, he discovered about R30, 000 in penalties which were linked to a new model with the same licence plate, which Maseko now drives. On Friday, Motshoane said he was surprised by the court hearing and that investigating officers had not informed him."I don't have an agenda of tarnishing [Maseko]. He has paid the fines. He is no longer using the number plates. I was able to renew my licence," he said.story_article_left1He said he knew Maseko "from many years ago when he was a student and still involved in Azapo politics. I was an altar boy. They used our church as a hiding place. My brother-in-law, who is late, was his close friend."When I was working for Engen in Cape Town and he was working for BP, we used to communicate. He knows me well and I know him well - but we are not buddy-buddy."But Maseko has denied knowing Motshoane, saying that he probably had only a chance meeting previously. He said: "Because of who I am, he probably would have taken a bit of interest in me."In Maseko's version of events, he sold the car to a dealership but asked to keep his old number plates. Later, the dealership told him they were unable to secure the number and he then asked them to reverse the order of the numbers and letters. But Motshoane has said that Maseko reversed the order of the numbers and letters on the licence plates only after Motshoane confronted him over the "cloned" plates. When asked about the allegations on Friday, Maseko said: "I'm yet to see that in terms of the complaint."He confirmed that the traffic fines had been settled.Maseko has been CEO of Telkom since April 2013.He was previously chief operating officer of Vodacom Group, and is also a previous CEO of oil and gas company BP Southern Africa. - Additional reporting by Bloomberg..
