Carnivores, celebrate! Two new branches of the smashburger franchise, RocoMamas, have opened up in Durban.

Launched in South Africa in 2013, RocoMamas quickly grew a solid reputation for being a damn fine spot to grab a damn fine burger. As the franchise has expanded across the country, RocoMamas has grown not only in branch numbers, but in its influence too.

According to their website, RocoMamas boasts the most Instagrammed burger in South Africa. Quite a boast!

What’s it like? 

RocoMamas is a niche burger joint that’s big on casual and even bigger on ambience. As you bite into one of their famous burgers, you’ll be surrounded by busy tables, vibrant service and the thump of good music.

RocoMamas is a place for mates to meet up and chow down before a night out on the town. 

What makes a smashburger so special?

RocoMamas prides itself on using fresh ingredients throughout their menu. Brian Altriche, who launched the niche burger brand, tells us that, “RocoMamas developed and owns the intellectual property to the smashburger in South Africa, over a three-year period, by utilizing different cuts of beef to maximize the flavour and making use of a special smash tool to smash the burgers.

“There are some other secrets that go into the cooking process but we won't be divulging those!”

The menu

Grabbing a quick dinner for less than a hundred rand can be a challenge these days, but at RocoMamas it’s a reality.

Take your pick from the list of burgers on the menu, or create your own unique burger, ticking off ingredients you’d like to savour.

Check out their Limited Edition specials, like the Slaw Daddy, before they get whipped off the menu, only to be replaced by another winning option.

RocoMamas aren’t shy on the shoestring fries size either: at RocoMamas, a medium size serving of their signature fries could take up most of your plate. I am a die-hard potato fan, and I couldn’t finish my serving… High praise indeed.
