While hot dogs might have once been reserved for kids’ parties and fairgrounds, these delicious street treats have been revolutionised, and their grown-up big brothers take gourmet to a new level.

Here are three Johannesburg eateries that have given the humble hot dog a gastronomic makeover:

1) Great Dane, Braamfontein

When someone mentions hot dogs in Jozi, Great Dane is probably the first place that springs to mind. Having established itself as both a gourmet eatery and the perfect spot for a good night out in town, Great Dane manages to straddle being a go-to spot for both lunch and dinner.

Open from Thursday to Saturday from noon to 2am, the atmosphere at Great Dane is so fantastic that you may well find yourself stopping in for lunch, and staying for dinner – and then a dance.

Don’t miss: The Plain Jane (which comes with home-made mustard and tomato sauce) if you want a gourmet take on an old classic, or opt for The Wrestler (chilli beef, nachos, cheddar cheese, avo, sour cream and salsa) if you want something a little more exciting.

2) Stuff Cafe, Maboneng

Open daily from 10am to 7pm, Stuff Cafe should be top of your list next time you have a hankering for a hot dog at pretty much any time of day.

Made from second-hand shipping containers, Stuff Cafe has a vibrant atmosphere that makes it perfect for hanging out with friends or entertaining colleagues.

The delicious hot dogs are matched only by the infamous malted milkshakes (try the condensed milk and coconut shake), so arrive hungry.

Don’t miss: The German, which is topped with pastrami, sauerkraut, and tangy mustard.

3) The National Eatery and Speakeasy, Parktown North

Though The National might not be known for its hot dogs (there’s far too much delicious food on the menu for one dish to play the star), it still has some of the best in the city.

Free-range pork sausages from acorn-fed animals are served in a brioche hot dog bun and served with chips and onion rings, delivering a culinary experience that’ll have you coming back over and over again.

Don’t miss: The Asian, with home-made kimchi, veg pickles, and slaw dressed in wasabi mayo.
