GRAHAMSTOWN: JAZZNduduzo MakhathiniDSG HALL / TUESDAY JULY 7 / 19.30pm / R80 (nationalartsfestival.co.za)The Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Jazz brings his spiritually nutritious compositions - at once vividly nostalgic and uncompromisingly inventive - to the National Arts Festival. The piano maestro Makhathini's band on the night is young but superb: Mark Fransman and Justin Bellairs on sax, Sakhile Simani on trumpet, Romy Brauteseth on bass and Kesivan Naidoo on drums. 2. JOBURG: ARTPresent: Raél Jero SalleyGALLERY MOMO / JULY 9 - AUGUST 3Aside from applying paint on canvas, Chicago-raised Raél Salley is also a senior lecturer at UCT, a visiting professor at UCLA, a curator, researcher and consultant. But his brush does some very fine talking, too. Salley's abstractions are jubilant, radiant, suggesting Marc Rothko on a regimen of MDMA, while his figurative paintings are evocatively erotic, though always applying a clear-eyed restraint. 3. CAPE TOWN BALLETA Spartacus of AfricaARTSCAPE OPERA HOUSE / JULY 8, 10, 11, 12 / R175-R375 (Computicket)The Thracian slave revolutionary gets an African remix in this lavish ballet, featuring international artists and more than 100 South African professional and student dancers. The music of Aram Khachaturian is performed by the full Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Choreographed by Veronica Paeper, star soloists include Brooklyn Mack and Andile Ndlovu of the Washington Ballet. 4. DURBAN MUSICJoan ArmatradingICC ARENA / JULY 7 / R450-R650 (Computicket)(Also East London on July 6 and Joburg, July 9-11)The British singer-songwriter returns to SA on her last major world tour, at age 64. "For the first time these concerts will be me solo on stage playing the guitar, piano and singing," she told Lifestyle. "I want these to be special, one-to-one experiences. I've enjoyed performing for the past 42 years - now I want to capture a unique memory for both myself and the audience." 5. CAPE TOWN ARTAsk for What You Want: Lady SkollieWORLDART GALLERY/ UNTIL JULY 30Laura Windvogel, aka Lady Skollie, makes art on the themes of gender roles, sex, greed and lust. Lady Skollie explores the complexities of expectations we project onto our romantic and sexual interactions. By revealing her own sometimes unrealistic expectations of love and sex, Windvogel, who has a degree in history of art and Dutch literature, invites the viewer to examine their own codes and dreams...
