Mampara of the week: King Dalindyebo

03 January 2016 - 02:00 By Hogarth

King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, dagga-smoking monarch of the Thembu, is clearly not the royal standard when it comes to setting a good example to his subjects. This week he began his 12-year sentence for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, arson and kidnapping. About time, too. The rule of law doesn't appear to be especially close to the heart of this former DA member, given that he reigns over his people as if there were no constitution at all. He lodged a royal flush of objections to spare him time behind bars, his lawyers arguing the charges arose because he was doing his kingly duties. "The nation can't afford a day without a head," said a traditional leader in the monarch's camp. Really? What subject would want to go a day without such regal hands on the whip?..
