A Van der Merwe is among the leading try scorers at the Rugby World Cup. And it's no joke. This Van was born in Worcester 29 years ago and, aged 17, he left South Africa with his family in 2003 for Regina, the capital of Canadian province Saskatchewan. He is now an old hand at World Cups, having played at the tournaments of 2007, 2011 and now 2015 - and scoring tries in each of them.He is known to his rugby teammates in the Canadian team and at Glasgow Warriors as "DTH" for obvious reasons. Daniel Tailliferrer Hauman van der Merwe is a bit of a mouthful.Van der Merwe began playing rugby from the age of five at Lanner House, a private primary school in Worcester. His speed on the athletics track marked him out as a wing and he made the Boland under-16 squad. He has been successful for Canada at this World Cup, scoring a try in each of their three games so far. His three tries have taken his scoring for Canada to 18 tries in 37 tests.story_article_left1He made his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Barbados in Bridgetown in 2006. Canada won 69-3 on their way to the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France where he played in all four games, one as fullback against Australia. The Canadians lost to Wales, Australia and Fiji and drew 12-12 with Japan, with him scoring one of the two tries. In the next World Cup - hosted by New Zealand - Canada did France a favour by upsetting Tonga 25-20 in Whangarei. After France lost 19-14 to Tonga, the Canadian upset helped the Tricolores finish second in Pool A to New Zealand. The French then reached the final, narrowly beating England and Wales on the way before meeting pool rivals, the All Blacks, in a final that was won 8-7 by the home side. At this World Cup, Van der Merwe has revealed his full potential. Having played 15 games at centre between 2009 and 2012, he has been returned to the wing where he has impressed. Before the weekend's games, he had made the most metres - 328 - and the second most breaks with six (shared with All Black Nene Milner-Skudder and Welshman Gareth Davies) after England fullback Mike Brown's seven.- Sports Staff..
