A grandfather is being hailed as a hero after CCTV footage captured the moment he jumped into the path of an oncoming train to rescue an 18-month-old baby.

The man was on an outing with his wife, granddaughter and the baby's mother when the incident happened at Wenworthville station in Sydney, Australia.

According to 9NEWS, the man reportedly let go of the stroller to speak to the girl's mother, not realising the platform had a slight slope.

CCTV footage shows the stroller rolling towards the end of the platform, and plunging onto the tracks as the train approaches. The 62-year-old grandfather jumped onto the tracks, flinging the baby and stroller back onto the platform.

Unable to get back onto the platform, he is seen running down the tracks away from the approaching train, able to finally leap to the safety.

The baby girl reportedly only suffered a few cuts and bruises while the grandfather escaped unharmed.
