Banting maize-free pap a hit at Cape shisa nyama

"We are fat and pap makes you very tired," said Jomo Makatesi, the supervisor at Maphindi's butchery and restaurant in Nyanga, Cape Town. That was one of the reasons she was keen to try the low-carb, high-fat Heba pap when the Sunday Times arrived with a supply last week.Makatesi was excited about the new pap. She had never heard of the Banting diet, but she acknowledged that starch was a problem."I am dying to lose weight. Starch is so heavy. I work all day and don't have time for gym," she said.story_article_left1Customers at Maphindi's, with its meat-packed fridges and steaming pots of vegetables and pap, were initially wary of the new product, but generally happy with the taste and texture imparted by its ingredients: coconut flour, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, psyllium husks and xanthan gum.Loyiso Madlingozi said he would definitely eat it again."It's soft and smooth. It doesn't taste like normal pap. I would be the first one to buy it," he said.Pap doesn't normally go down well with Mandiso Zinto, but he said: "This is nice. For those who like pap, I would recommend it."Godfrey Shayo said: "This looks like it has gravy, and tastes like it already has sauce on it." But he admitted: "You have to get used to it."Makatesi said the establishment would consider offering the new pap, with just 8g of carbs per 100g, on its menu.Lizanne van Niekerk, the brand manager of Heba's Cape Town manufacturer, Banting Boulevard, said the product was available in shops, but was mainly sold by community members to their friends and colleagues."We hope to one day see Banting spaza shops, where knowledge can be shared about good health and nutrition," said Van Niekerk...
