UCT student falls to her death

A third-year student at the University of Cape Town died after falling from the sixth floor of a residence on Thursday night‚ the institution said on Friday.

Simamukele Khanyile was a third-year student majoring in gender studies and anthropology.

"Late on Thursday‚ 17 March 2016‚ around 22h45‚ she fell from the sixth floor of Forest Hill residence‚" UCT confirmed in a statement. "Medical personnel immediately rushed to the scene and attempted to resuscitate her but she passed away at the scene."

Spokesperson Gerda Kruger expressed her deepest condolences and said the university is offering support to the family.

She said the "circumstances that preceded or led to the incident and tragic death are not yet known but are being investigated" by the police‚ with the assistance of university staff.

"The untimely death of an individual is always hard to understand and to accept‚" Kruger said‚ adding UCT was also "providing counselling to all who are affected by this incident".
