IN PICTURES: Protesters target foreign shop-owners

Protests over housing and service delivery hit foreign shop-owners in Dunoon hard on Sunday night‚ leaving their businesses looted and damaged.

The protesters also threw stones at the MyCiti bus station and left the streets strewn with litter. Dunoon is an informal settlement east of Table View in Cape Town.

Roads were closed temporarily on Monday morning because of the protests‚ which began at 8.45pm on Sunday‚ said SAPS spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

Police arrested 12 people on Sunday night. A case of public violence was opened early Monday morning.

Police were still on the scene when The Times visited Dunoon on Monday‚ keeping watch as shopowners moved their remaining stock to trucks.

Dunoon shop owners Ajibu Yusuf and Farida Toyi told The Times they lost everything to looters who were protesting the lack of housing in Dunoon.
