The state argued Sifiso Mahlangu is a sexual predator who deliberately preyed on a vulnerable and defenceless member of society and that there were no substantial or compelling circumstances to justify deviating from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment

A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for killing his 65-year-old father in Stilfontein, North West.

Samuel Xaba was sentenced by the Stilfontein regional court on Friday and declared unfit to possess a firearm.

North West police spokesperson Capt Majang Skalkie said the murder took place at a local church at about 4.30am on February 15 2025.

Skalkie said the local priest had received a call from neighbours informing him that the elderly man had allegedly been attacked by his son.

The victim was beaten repeatedly on the face and head with a piece of wood. He reportedly tried to escape and seek help but collapsed near the church gate, where he died from his injuries.

The priest notified the police. Xaba fled the scene but was traced and arrested later that morning.

North West police commissioner Lt-Gen Arthur Peter Adams welcomed the sentence, saying the murder of a family member was a devastating incident that left families and communities traumatised.
