The Madlanga commission of inquiry says businessman Suliman Carrim has breached a bail condition requiring his attorneys to report in person to the inquiry within 48 hours to arrange his next appearance.

Carrim was granted R100,000 bail on Wednesday in a case linked to his failure to appear before the commission to continue his testimony.

Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said on Friday that Carrim’s attorneys had written to the commission to draw attention to the bail judgment handed down by the Pretoria magistrate’s court, instead of reporting in person as required.

“The attorneys have not taken the initiative envisaged in the relevant bail condition. As a result, Mr Carrim has failed to comply with the bail condition,” Michaels said.

The court on Wednesday said failure to comply with any of these conditions will be considered a breach of bail, which may result in the issuance of a warrant for his arrest.

Carrim was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport earlier this month after failing to appear before the commission.
