Sometimes things don't work out as planned, particularly when it requires millennials to be offline for 24 hours. As most of Twitter demonstrated, they were just unable to stay offline to get data to fall.

The hashtag #SocialMediaBlackout has been trending on Twitter for 24 hours, despite its initial aim to have people "boycott" social media and buying data.

Instead of switching off, tweeps made excuses for why they found themselves online.

From being self-appointed security guards, to "ears on the ground for the movement" and outright "I'm an addict" excuses, Twitter was it's usually savage self.

The "faithful" few that honoured the call were disappointed that their fellow tweeps betrayed them. The memes were hilarious:
