Actress Pearl Thusi has responded to backlash over her participation in a tour to Zimbabwe ahead of the country's national elections on August 23.

Pearl, Sonia Mbele and Sello Maake kaNcube shot up trends lists after a picture of them seated with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other delegates, all wearing scarves in Zim colours, surfaced on social media.

Pearl went live on Instagram recently speaking about how she had no regrets about going on the trip.

“For those people who made it look like a political trip, those people are the ones who punished the three of us, who were told we are going there for good times and tourism.

“I had a good time, and I don't have any regrets whatsoever. I don't regret a thing, so all the best to you guys. I had a scarf. What was I supposed to do? The president gave me a scarf. I took the scarf,” she said.

Pearl said she didn't know anything about the elections later this month.

“Also point me to a country where everyone is happy, where everyone is pleased with the leadership. I'll be back in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is a beautiful country. What's more beautiful about Zimbabwe is the people. I didn't even know there were elections coming up. I just wanted to go to Victoria Falls. Why is Sello not trending, why is Sonia not trending? Why are you guys coming for me also? Cause you think I'm an easy target.”

Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono lambasted Sonia's “tone death” comments about the country after she claimed there was immense growth in Zimbabwe.

“She lies that there is growth in leaps and bounds yet she is travelling on potholed roads and sees Zimbabweans seeking healthcare in South Africa,” he wrote.

Sonia took to her timeline saying she was only in the business of producing and manufacturing.

“What you may not know is that I do business in both producing and manufacturing in and outside SA. Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, Namibia, Zambia, Zim, US, UK, and Dubai. Go where people see you and respect you. The rest I don’t get involved,” she wrote.

Sello has remained mum on the backlash.
