Diamond producer De Beers was "deeply saddened" by the death of Louis Nchindo, the former representative of the De Beers Group in Botswana, it says.

Earlier, the Botswana Gazette reported that Nchindo - who was facing corruption charges - was reported missing on Tuesday by his family.

"The Gazette has learnt that he was found dead in the bush in Kasane, in what has been reported as a suicide case."

De Beers said that during his 30 year career, which started at Anglo American Corporation, followed by De Beers and lastly Debswana, Nchindo became a leading figure in the global diamond industry.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children and grandchildren during these difficult times," the company said.

Until 2007, Nchindo held the post of managing director of Debswana Diamond Company, the joint venture between De Beers and Botswana.

He was to have been tried in April on 36 charges of corruption which allegedly occurred while he headed Debswana.
