Karaga Dimap Mondli Makhanya is spot-on about how many a struggle hero has betrayed the ideals of the revolution in his column "Selebi is not the only struggle icon who has made a pact with the devil" (July 4).
One can only hope that the Selebi trial is a source of encouragement for those who still believe in a better South Africa and a warning to those of our leaders who choose to forget what the struggle was about. It is very sad indeed that many of our leaders are surrendering our democracy to short-sighted consumerism.
