Tyla Peakes: Veteran Hollywood star Jane Fonda, 73, has revealed her secret recipe for hanging onto a youthful figure: good genes and good sex. Last week, the actress stole the headlines at the Cannes Film Festival when she walked the red carpet in a gown that showed off her firm breasts, curvy hips and slim waist. She outshone stars half, or even a third, her age.

So how does she do it? Besides the DNA, exercise regimen and a few nips and tucks, Fonda says she has an active sex life.

After three marriages, the man of the moment is record producer Richard Perry. And she is quick to point out that she didn't go out searching for love.

"It starts with sex and grows into love," she said. That's telling them, Jane.

The photographs of her at Cannes are amazing. It's hard to believe that this woman was making headlines before I was even born. My parents hadn't even started dating when Fonda was protesting against the Vietnam War in the 1960s.

She then morphed from a sex symbol into a fitness guru, but I only began hearing about her when she was going through her divorce from CNN founder Ted Turner in 2001. Few things have been around as long as she has - she even outdates the Cannes festival. This year, it was held for the 64th time, and she's been around nearly a decade longer than that.

It makes her sound ancient, but no one should be surprised that the actress is still having a rousing time in bed. A study a few years back found that a significant number of old people were sexually active late in life. It found that more than half of people aged 64 to 75 were having regular sex, and of those aged 75 to 85, a surprising 26% were still at it.

When I look at some of our "elderly" stars today, it's not difficult to imagine them getting frisky. This month, Cher turned 65. But she isn't ready for the rocking-chair yet. She recently finished a season in Las Vegas, where she wore the trademark see-through gowns that I wouldn't try on even in the dark!

She says her present boyfriend is the only one she's ever had that's older than 30. Woweee!

Remember Debbie Harry of Blondie? She's also reaching retirement age this year. And although she claims she fears "growing old", she is about to embark on a tour of Australia.

Both she and Cher are ageless miracles, but even they have to stand back and salute the grand old rocker, Tina Turner, still doing high kicks at 71.

Turn to Hollywood and there are plenty of stars who don't look - or act - their age. Try to think of these three as pensioners: Diane Keaton, 65, Susan Sarandon, 65, and Goldie Hawn, 66. It's like 65 is the new 40.

The men are just as youthful. Paul McCartney is tying the knot again soon . He will only be a year or two short of 70 when he takes his bride off on honeymoon.

And he's not the only 68-year-old with a new bride at this side. Harrison Ford married actress Calista Flockhart last year.

It's not difficult to see that Clint Eastwood is getting on (he turns 81 on Tuesday), but did you realise that Sylvester Stallone is 64 and Burt Reynolds 75 (and still hot).

I've always said I would never date anyone over 50, but I would probably have to think twice if I was approached by billionaire businessman Richard Branson, 60, actor David Hasselhof, 58, or Denzel Washington, 56.

To be honest, I'll admit that I'd jump at the chance (if I can elbow all the slinky 50- and 60-year-olds out of the way).

Things definitely aren't what they used to be. As the youngsters get older, the oldies get younger.
