R&B singer Trey Songz has promised to make "the most beautiful women in the world" swoon when he arrives in South Africa next weekend.

The heavily tattooed 26-year-old, who seemed particularly excited during his collaboration with Kelly Rowland at the recent BET Awards, seemingly doesn't even need to open his mouth to impress his large following of mostly women, and gay men.

While he's no slouch on the vocal front, when compared with contemporaries such as Chris Brown, Jason DeRulo and Omarion, Songz's poster-boy looks put him ahead of the pack in the sex appeal department.

And if he can get Rowland to undress with just a few smooches on the neck, as seen during that sultry BET Awards performance, surely lasses in Durban (The Wavehouse, next Friday) and Johannesburg (The Dome, Saturday) won't be any different.

It might just be his accent, but Songz speaks just as he sings - in a seductive and slow tone.

Songz said he wasn't always flirtatious and confident on stage. He used to be "just" Tremaine Aldon Neverson from Petersburg, Virginia, in the US.

His friends at school convinced him to sing when he was 14, and he was discovered at a talent show two years later by producer Troy Taylor (who has worked with the likes of Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, Omarion, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Gill and Aretha Franklin).

Songz's debut album, I Gotta Make It, was released in 2004.

"I initially believed singing was way too far-fetched [a career] for me," he said.

He is looking forward to meeting South African women.

"It's going to be my first time [in South Africa] and I'm so excited. I can't wait to see them [the South African girls] either. Y'all got the most beautiful women in the world and I want to be in their presence as soon as possible," he said.

"The people will love [the show]. It's about getting me down there and affiliated with everybody. It's about showing people what a Trey Songz performance is like."

Publicist Melanie Ramjee said ticket sales were satisfactory.

"People in South Africa have been duped [about music concerts] before, and are rightly sceptical, but once he does his arrival press conference and they see pictures of him in the country, we may see the rest of the tickets go," she said.

Songz arrives in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Tickets to his shows range between R350 and R550.
