EFF National Chairperson Advocate Dali Mpofu is no stranger to representing public figures. From controversial personalities to opposition political leaders, when it comes to work, there are no political lines.

He's been called "The People's Advocate" but Mpofu has downplayed the title.

"Some of these titles, you don't choose them, people make their own observations," he told TimesLIVE.

Mpofu told TimesLIVE that he has declined "a few" high-profile cases this year. He said changing people's lives is his focus.

"When the judgement is final, it impacts the people's futures, especially with the high profile cases.''

TimesLIVE reported earlier this week that former North West ANC chairperson Supra Mahumapelo had enlisted Mpofu to step in and assist him in his fight against the ANC national executive. Mahumapelo is challenging its decision to disband the provincial ANC leadership.

It's not the first time Mpofu has crossed political lines in the name of work. Here are five prominent people that got "The People's Advocate" ready to report for duty.

Gareth Cliff

In 2016, the radio personality was fired by M-Net from his position as a judge on Idols SA. This after he tweeted a response to real estate agent Penny Sparrow's racist remarks. Mpofu's decision to represent the controversial personality stirred up mixed reactions from the public. Cliff successfully won the lawsuit, with the ruling that he be reinstated immediately.

Patricia de Lille

Mpofu represented the former mayor of Cape Town's battle with the Democratic Alliance (DA) when she filed an interdict against the City of Cape Town for declaring her position vacant. The interdict was successful with De Lille retaining her mayoral position.

She resigned as mayor and a member of the party on October 31.

MDC

The Zimbabwean leading opposition party sought the legal services of Mpofu to challenge the 2018 election results. MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa lost to current Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mpofu represented the MDC free of charge.

5. Tom Moyane

The legal counsel of suspended SARS commissioner Tom Moyane is led by Mpofu. Moyane was suspended earlier this year. His disciplinary proceedings have been halted until the constitutional review of the hearing is completed.

The Nugent Commission is holding an inquiry into governance at the tax agency.  According to BusinessLIVE, Moyane recently described himself as the best SARS commissioner in the democratic era.
