At least 102 people are believed to have died in flooding in south-western Nigeria since the weekend, according to a BBC report quoting the Nigerian Red Cross on Thursday.

Heavy rainfall caused a reservoir in the city of Ibadan to overflow, washing away numerous houses. Many people became trapped in the rubble of buildings that collapsed, the broadcaster said.

Many of the victims were children. More than 2,000 people were made homeless.

Flooding, which is common during the rainy season in Nigeria, has been particularly heavy, according to meteorologists.
