Three metre great white shark netted in Richard's Bay

A great white shark measuring nearly three metres was found in the shark nets of the main swimming beach in Richard’s Bay two weeks ago.

KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board spokesperson Jeremy Cliff said that the female shark had been tangled in the nets and had died.

Cliff said that finding a great white in the province's northern most net installation was not uncommon.

"These animals are able to move huge distances and there were even reports of a great white sighting off Reunion Island," he told News24.

"They [great whites'] are associated with cool water and seal colonies, but they are more than able to swim in warmer water and cover significant distances to get there," he said.

According to National Geographic, great whites are the largest predatory fish on Earth.

They grow to an average of 4.6m, however some specimens of over six metres have been recorded.
