The InSight lander spacecraft from NASA has relayed the first ever sounds of Martian wind from the Red Planet.

The lander, with 2.2 meter long solar panels, touched down in late November. Rumble caused by low vibrations from the wind, blowing from a northeasterly to southeasterly direction at 5 to 7 meters a second, were tracked by the InSight lander on December 1.

The wind was picked up by two sensors on the spacecraft, an air pressure sensor and a seismometer, which both recorded the sound differently.

NASA said it wanted to test the InSight to see if tremor and marsquakes have the same effect as earthquakes. Those vibrations bounce around the planet, making a ringing sound.

NASA is seeking to expand its quest for sound on the planet as the Mars 2020 rover is scheduled to land with two microphones.
