The KwaZulu-Natal government is building a R90-million village for orphans and abandoned children, premier Zweli Mkhize said on Wednesday.

"This marks a new chapter for many rejected, neglected and abused children who will now have homes and grow up in a warm family environment," said Mkhize.

Sixteen of an eventual 96 units in the village in Verulam, south of Durban, had been completed.

The project was being tackled in partnership with non-government organisation Lungisa Indlela, the premier said.
