PLATINUM Stars and Lamontville Golden Arrows set a record for the most goals scored in a Premier Soccer League match when Stars won 6-4 in Phokeng on Saturday.

Since the start of the PSL in 1996, there have been six matches in which nine goals have been scored.

Stars raced to a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes, only to trail 4-2 at halftime. In the second half, Stars slammed four unanswered goals into the net to seal their eighth win in nine games and move level on 28 points with second-placed Orlando Pirates.

Thuso Phala knocked in the record-setting 10th goal during injury time .

Kaizer Chiefs defeated Witbank Aces 7-2 in the 1996-1997 season with Pollen Ndlanya netting four of the goals.

Chiefs also defeated Cape Town Spurs 5-4 in what might be the greatest game in PSL history during the 1998-1999 season.

Manning Rangers beat Vaal Professionals by the same score that same season.

Rangers were involved in another nine-goal game in 1998-1999 when they beat QwaQwa Stars 7-2. The next season, Classic defeated Hellenic 5-4, and Supersport United won 7-2 against AmaZulu.

AmaZulu changed their name to Zulu Royals only to be shamed, yet again, by Supersport, who thrashed them 8-1 in the 2003-2004 season, the last time nine goals were scored in a top-flight game.

The overall South African goal-scoring record in all competitions was set last season when Mamelodi Sundowns hammered Powerlines 24-0 in the first round of the Nedbank Cup. The highest recorded number of league goals scored in a game was set in the old whites-only league by Durban City when they beat Johannesburg City 17-3 in 1961.
