The SABC may have finally advertised the chief operations officer vacancy this past weekend, but is it just a case of formalities before acting incumbent Hlaudi Motsoeneng is given a permanent post?

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said yesterday that Motsoeneng would have to apply like every other candidate .

Motsoeneng was hired back in 1995 as a stringer before being appointed as a journalist in Bloemfontein - but he has been accused of not being in possession of a matric certificate and failing to rise to the top.

Prospective candidates for the post must have at least five years of broadcasting experience at managerial level, a relevant degree or diploma, and help improve the corporation's profitability .

Creative Workers Union spokesman Matankana Mothapo yesterday described Motsoeneng as a "workaholic".

Last year, some 40 bishops from a variety of denominations visited the SABC to pray for Motsoeneng' s leadership.

DA communications spokes-man Marian Shinn said Friday's press conference - where it was announced that the SABC had paid back Nedbank part of the R1-billion "government guaranteed loan" - was "a huge sales pitch" for Motsoeneng.

Critics feel Motsoeneng exerts an undue level of influence over the broadcaster's editorial department.
