Over R5 million has been spent on repairing vandalised and burgled Western Cape schools since last April, it was reported on Monday.

The Cape Argus reported that this was an increase of more than R1 million compared to the 2011/2012 financial year.

Education MEC Donald Grant's spokeswoman Bronagh Casey said fencing, piping and electrical cabling had been the biggest target for vandals.

She said that in many cases, fencing that was replaced was soon vandalised or stolen again.

The department had since decided to replace wire mesh fencing with steel palisade and concrete palisade, which was more expensive but less prone to vandalism.
