A three-year-old has died and seven children have been hospitalised in Delft, near Cape Town, after they came into contact with a toxic chemical.

The substance has been taken to a nearby hospital for disposal.

African Christian Democratic Party councillor Demetrius Dudley called on Cape Town officials to take a "stronger stance" on illegal dumping.

"[My party] is outraged at yet another young life being lost due to the irresponsible behaviour of persons and companies who illegally dump chemicals," he said.
