The new year got off to a joyous start for employees of a restaurant in San Francisco, in the US, at the weekend when a patron left them a $2000 (R23500) tip.
Britain's Daily Mail reported that the whopping tip - on a bill of only $50.74 - was left by a diner at Tacolicious on Friday last week.
According to a restaurant employee, the diner ''comes in here all the time and he's amazing, amazing to the staff''.
A photograph of the receipt was posted to the ''Tips for Jesus'' Instagram account - set up last year by a person or people who had set out to ''do the Lord's work, one tip at a time''.
ABC News reported that, two days after Christmas, three staff members at an Arizona restaurant were stunned to discover that a patron known for leaving "Tips for Jesus" left them $11000 in tips.
According to one of the owners of a Crudo restaurant, in Phoenix, Arizona, the customer arrived with a woman for snacks and drinks on December 27.
He left a $1 000 tip on a $331.40 bill.
But then the couple decided to stay on for more drinks - and left a $10 000 tip on the second bill.
According to ABC News, the words "Tips for Jesus" were scrawled on the receipt.
The Daily Mail reports that Jack Selby, the former vice-president of PayPal is suspected of being behind the monster tipping phenomenon but other speculation has it that a collective of wealthy people is responsible.
