A land claim brought against one of South Africa's largest sugar farmers threatens to stop a R1.1-billion renewable energy project.

Charl Senekal Suiker Trust, which has 5000ha of irrigated land, is part of a group that plans to build a 16.5MW biomass facility in KwaZulu-Natal that will produce electricity by burning leftover cane.

Talks to settle claims by four communities are due to take place today.

"The whole project can collapse if they don't accept our offer," landowner Charl Senekal said this week.
