1.000 Luganda settlement residents in Durban's Mariannhill area have taken to the streets in a service delivery protest.

According to News24 some of the protesters set alight the Luganda Community Resource Centre, and the nearby streets are strewn with debris and burning tyres.

Police have called in reinforcements to try and keep control of the area around the burning hall, and have used a water cannon to douse the flames.

"We have no water but they have water to spray us," Sandra Geduld, one of the angry residents said after complaining about the police using tear gas where there were children.

She told reporters that the residents are angry with their councillor.

"He don't come for meetings and if he does he lies and tells us shit," she said.

Ward 13 councillor Mduduzi Gumede says that a meeting has been scheduled for Sunday.
