The City of Tshwane is implementing city-wide water restrictions with immediate effect due to a water shortage.

"This follows sporadic water interruptions the city is experiencing due to the extreme hot weather conditions," the metro said in a statement on Friday.

"The heat wave has seen the water demand constantly increasing, thus resulting in reservoirs across the city operating at a low water level. This has also slowed down the pace at which water builds up in the reservoirs as some high lying areas are experiencing low water pressure." A schedule of the restrictions could not be determined as it depended on the water levels in the reservoirs.

"A spot fine in terms of the city's by-laws will be issued if the above water restrictions are transgressed," the metro said.

The city apologised for the inconvenience. It pleaded with residents to use water sparingly and not water their gardens during the day until the situation normalised.
