All examinations at the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Soshanguve North and South campuses have been postponed indefinitely, the university said on its website on Sunday.

The university added that “a further announcement” will be made on Monday and that the postponement came “due to the ongoing volatility”.

Three halls were set alight at the Soshanguve campus during a protest.

Police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng had said furniture was damaged as a result. Two private vehicles belonging to security guards were also set alight during the student protest at around 22:30 on Saturday, he added.

A photo on social networking site Twitter showed a torched bakkie inside the hall, surrounded by overturned desks and chairs.

The fire brigade was also called to the campus.

The TUT website previously said exams at the campus would start as scheduled on Monday.

A similar announcement was posted on its Facebook page a few hours before the protest.
