Tutu appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of malicious damage to property.

Desmond Tutu's wife, Leah, had laid the charge at the Milnerton police station in May last year. Details of what happened had not been released.

Shortly after the incident, the Tutus released a statement via the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, saying only that the family was "naturally distressed and deeply saddened".
