Several "racist statements and hate speech" have been graffitied around the University of the Western Cape campus, the institution said on Friday.

"The University of the Western Cape is disgusted at the racist statements and hate speech that have been discovered all over campus this morning. We condemn these cowardly acts committed under the cover of darkness," it said.

The university said that a difference of opinion should not be allowed to degenerate into polarisation.

Some of the slogans included "Fuck all" on an athletics centre board, as well as "Fuck all whites" and "Fuck white tears" on a wall and window.

"#FeesMustFall" was also spray-painted in several locations.

The university said that any attempt to threaten unity by inciting divisions between students and staff along racial lines would not be tolerated.

"A university is a space for open debate, discussion and the sharing of ideas. It is not a space for racism, tribalism, ethnic, gender and all forms of discrimination.

"We are investigating this matter and, once the culprits are identified, appropriate action will be taken against them," the university said.
