Disaster teams went into action on Saturday after a shack fire in Cape Town destroyed 48 homes and left 110 people without a roof over their head.

The South African Red Cross Society provided humanitarian relief in Masiphumelele‚ near the southern peninsula coastal village of Kommetjie‚ and officials from the City of Cape Town human settlements department were sent in to assist with alternative accommodation.

Theo Layne‚ spokesman for the city fire and rescue department‚ said the fire started shortly before 3am.

"No injuries were reported and the cause is undetermined at this time‚" he said.

"Disaster risk management will determine how those that were left homeless may be helped."
