Four houses are reported to have been torched by angry residents during the protest which targeted alleged drug dens and brothels in the Rosettebville.

A total of nine arrests have been made following the burning of houses in the southern Johannesburg suburb of Rosettenville this weekend.

According to the police’s Kay Makhubela‚ one person was arrested on Saturday night with a further eight people arrested on Sunday.

“They were arrested for being illegal immigrants and being in the possession of drugs‚” he said.

“The police are there - they were deployed in a big number and we will continue to monitor the areas. They have been doing stop-and-go searches and raiding the houses [believed to] have had illegal activities taking place there‚” he added. A total of 10 houses‚ thus far‚ have been burnt‚ allegedly by community members who believe foreigners are infiltrating the houses and making use of them as brothels.
