New protests flared up in the south of Johannesburg on Tuesday morning‚ police said.

The demonstrations came a day after residents of Freedom Park and Eldorado Park staged protests‚ blockading roads around the area‚ heavily affecting traffic‚ including the N12‚ Golden Highway‚ N1 and Union Road.

Police spokesman Lt Col Lungelo Dlamini said the situation was calm in Eldorado Park on Tuesday but that protests had spread to Ennerdale‚ some 20 km from Eldorado Park.

Reports said that Lawley and Orange Farm had also been affected‚ leading to road closures in those areas.

Residents of Freedom Park on Monday accused Johannesburg executive mayor Herman Mashaba of ignoring their calls for land to build RDP houses.

Rubber bullets were fired to disperse protesters on Monday morning‚ but did little to deter angry residents. Some incurred injuries in the standoff with police.
