A group of demonstrators halted construction at the multi-billion rand Oceans development in Umhlanga on Monday‚ the second work stoppage in less than a week.

Crowds of people carrying sticks and chanting struggle songs blockaded the gate to the development on Umhlanga’s Lagoon Drive‚ defying an urgent court interdict obtained by developer Vivian Reddy last week.

Riot police have been called in to monitor the situation‚ which is virtually a repeat of events that took place last Wednesday.

Oceans Umhlanga has been touted as the largest mixed development in South Africa. The development will become home to the Radisson Blu Hotel‚ a world-class shopping mall and luxury apartments.

A leader of the Delangokubona business forum‚ Trueman Mnyandu‚ told TimesLIVE on Wednesday that they had taken a decision to stop all work at Reddy’s sites. This‚ they said‚ was because Reddy and developers had reneged on an agreement to accommodate the forum and their “community”.
